In the ongoing adventures of Israeli super-spy Gabriel Allon we have trouble brewing in Moscow from the remains of the Soviet empire. A ex-KGB turned 'businessman' turned merchant of death is up to something nefarious. Allon must track down this arms dealer, find out what he's up to, save the bad guys family, all before....

Good summer read!

Silva was Claudette Yamin's favourite author. Elliot Yamin's mother was one of our regular customers until her passing earlier this year. It was little sad to see this book arrive as I am sure she would have enjoyed it. Normally I would view this as a blatant attempt to get me to push a book that I would normally never read nor order for either of my stores. One very slow afternoon I started looking around at the piles of books publishers were sending me in the hopes of getting the book onto my shelves. The book by Benioff caught my eye so I sat down for a little read.

In a word - Really Good! (ok, that's two...)

The book is a quest of two young men during the siege of Leningrad. Bonds of friendship, the discovery of love, adversary, failure, triumph... all the themes you would expect but done freshly in a novel setting. The war and the vagaries of the WW2 Soviet system and it's complete disregard fro human life create the backdrop for the story and if your not careful you may learn a thing or two.

A nice uplifting story that would make a good summer read although I recommend you save it for a snowy night by the fireplace for optimum enjoyment. I have several copies at the Richmond store at 40% off the list. These will go on sale April 15th (just in time to decompress from doing your taxes) and will be 25% of the list.

Harlan Coben writes taut thrillers, typically involving children or a family in crisis as the central theme. Adding a timely element to the plot line is the parental dilemma of installing spyware onto your childs computer and the possible consequences of such actions. As a new parent myself it left me with a lot to consider.

Hold Tight, more than most, may make you wonder if the author writes the last chapter first and then works towards that conclusion. Claudette Yamin, mother of American Idol singer Elliott Yamin, had been coming to our store here since we first opened (once with pre-Idol Elliott in tow). She was a very kind women who had a bit of a rough life until her son found fame and she carved out a niche as a speaker. The last couple of times I saw her she had not been doing all that well and had been in and out of the hospital last year. As I had not seen her since the holidays I tried calling her cell phone about a month ago, only to find it disconnected.

She enjoyed suspense and thriller novels and her favourite author was Daniel Silva. Whenever he had a new book coming out I always set one aside for her. She would also indulge little Finn and let him run off with her cane whenever she was in. Our hearts go out to Elliott and her family. She will be missed.

The Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss

Patrick Rothfuss' book, The Name of the Wind, has just been released in paperback and we have copies at 25% off list!

This was quite possible the best fantasy book I have read since LOTR. These books are available at both our Richmond and Charlottesville stores at 25% off the publisher's list. David Stone is a pen name for an unknown author claiming to be an Washington insider of some sort. His last book, The Echelon Vendetta, was a wild ride techno thriller that I can only describe as a dark, LSD fueled version of Tom Clancy.
